GREAT BRITAIN Annual Conference on the theme of pilgrimage Birmingham - 3 - 5 August, the Orthodox Fellowship of St John the Baptist, Associated members of SYNDEMOS, will be holding their Annual Conference 2001 on the theme 'Pilgrimage: 'I am the Way, the Truth and the Life'', with Bishop Kallistos of Thyateira and Great Britain and others. Participants will celebrate together the feast of the Transfiguration (new style), and the theme of pilgrimage will be examined thoroughly - why we go on pilgrimage, how we should go, life as a pilgrimage, and receiving pilgrims. This Conference will also be the occasion of the Annual Meeting of the General Assembly of the Fellowship. International Syposium on "Orthodoxy and the Future of Europe" Cambridge - 2 - 5 July 2001 was held an international symposium hosted by the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies and the Cambridge University Faculty of Divinity. The Symposium was attended by a number of leading Orthodox academics, church leaders and politicians, including Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira & Great Britain, Archbishop Christopher of Prague and Metropolitan John of Pergamon. The Symposium explored questions such as the nature of Europe, and the role of the Orthodox Churches in shaping the future of the continent. It was reconigsed that in order for the Orthodox churches to play a significant role in this process of shaping, they must engage in an open dialogue with the other traditions that are present in Europe today. The Symposium also addressed the infamous remark that Orthodoxy ends where Europe begins, and answered it resoundly in the negative. The Symposium was supported by the WCC, the Fellowship of St Alban
and St Sergius, and organised by Dr Marcus Plested, keynote speaker
in the forthcoming SYNDESMOS Youth Forum 2001. |
